THOUGHT

“Thought” is one of those concepts that seems obvious… until we try to define it precisely. In relation to God, it is precisely in thinking — in the very process of thought — that a human being discovers their likeness to Him.

Thought, although it needs neither hands nor feet, has a personal dimension and is essentially united with the person; it does not exist apart from them. It is within thought that our freedom of choice takes place; within it, love and hatred are formed. It is there that both profound intentions and foolish ideas are born.

We often judge our own or others’ actions as good or evil, forgetting that every action first came into existence in thought — even those we call “thoughtless.” Human beings came into being in intention — one could say, in the thought of God.

The Holy Spirit awakens good desires within us. He inspires us through promptings that arise from the Word of God. Captivated by the Gospel, we spontaneously think: we want to imitate Jesus.

Yet a question immediately arises: how are we to do this? What exactly are we meant to imitate in the life of the Lord Jesus? His appearance, the way He dressed, or the kind of food He ate? Probably not.

Perhaps then His manners, the way He spoke and prayed? These are certainly important — but not the most important.

To imitate Christ means above all to adopt His way of thinking: His values, His view of the human person, His goals, and His mindset.

For action begins in thought, and actions carry consequences. To imitate does not mean to copy. Jesus does not expect us to become replicas. Rather, what belongs to Him should gradually become ours as well. We are to learn His way of thinking, embrace it, and incorporate it into our daily choices.

This is exactly what Saint Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: “Do not conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and pleasing and perfect.”

In such a renewal of the heart and mind, there can also be help from LITANIES OF THE MOST SACRED MIND OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
